“With CENOS, we are able to develop inductors for new hardening cases without large expenses and set up more advanced heat treatment approaches without multiple lab trials. We had many ideas on how to harden the tooth area of the gear ring. However, we wanted to try out different options without creating large expenses but also meet the hardening zone requirements with the first inductor built.”

Kevin Tovar Estrada – a manufacturing engineer at GKN Driveline Celaya in Mexico, supervises induction hardening lines at the plant. He created a hardening “cookbook” – an algorithmic instruction for a machine operator to troubleshoot wrong hardening results.

Using CENOS, he built a hardening cookbook 60% faster, cut scrap by 60%, and extended coil lifetime by over 5X.

The simulation’s 93.8% accuracy gave Kevin confidence to optimize designs before production—saving time, parts, and costs. According to Kevin, CENOS is not just a tool, it’s a game-changer for induction hardening.

“The operational interface gave us almost no quantitative data of the process. For example, there are just three options for the frequency: high frequency, medium frequency, and low frequency, without any information of what are the absolute values of those frequencies. So, the engineers were wasting parts and time by doing numerous experiments, but still were struggling to get good results in many cases. Now, we know much better what and how our machine can do. Thus, we can work on the process improvements with confidence, experiment with new materials for parts. CENOS significantly improves R&D at our plants.”

RADIO FREQUENCY

We are a small induction heating company with more than 30 years of experience in designing excellent induction systems. Nevertheless, when we approach new customers, they still want to be 100% confident in our work. Simulation helps us to visualize results, ensure customers, and eliminate friction in getting orders.

“The Cenos simulation of induction heating played a vital role in understanding the influence of feed rate on the hardening depth of tool-grade steel rolls. As demonstrated in Figure 3, the simulation revealed significant variations in temperature depth across the roll diameter depending on the feed rate. These changes directly impacted the hardening depth, highlighting the feed rate as a critical factor in achieving desired material properties. When the feed rate was increased from 24 to 42 mm/min, the temperature depth decreased due to the reduced thermal energy transfer. This relationship is closely tied to the electrical current frequency utilized during the experiment. The integration of simulation tools like Cenos provides valuable insights into process optimization, aiding in the development of advanced manufacturing techniques for tool-grade steel rolls.”

A German company called Mittelstand works as an induction heating tooling shop and holds a huge number of orders from the automotive industry due to decades of experience in the engineering of induction projects. The induction-heating-specialized simulation software CENOS helps them by supporting their experience with bullet-proof evidence that attracts more orders and demonstrates sustainably good results even upon the change of engineer generations.

With one of the latest cases, Juan Carlos’ engineers managed to achieve 50% savings on the design and production time which led to surprising their customer with exceptionally fast delivery of a top-quality inductor. The customer’s request was to redesign the coil to meet the change in the hardening profile specification for wheel hub production the customer did. So, GH Electrotermia needed to adapt the inductor design quickly to meet the new requirements.

Based on induction heating experience it was pretty clear which parameters had to be modified in the coil to meet the new specifications. A couple of simulations later the design was nailed – way faster than producing prototype inductors and testing them in a lab.

“The first application I worked on was the design of wideband Yagi antennas (>10% 2:1 VSWR bandwidth at the design center frequency) for various amateur bands, ranging from 1.25m to 13cm. The motivation behind this was that, typically, one would need to buy two antennas from companies such as Directive Systems or Down East Microwave to cover an entire amateur band. However, if performance is comparable, it is more economical to build a wideband Yagi using materials from a local hardware store.

Ultimately, I was able to achieve ~10% bandwidths by carefully adjusting the element radius and spacing for the first three elements. I also achieved forward gain within about 1dB of a gain-optimized Yagi, with F-B ratios of 20 dB and sidelobes (the trickiest part) suppressed to around -15 dB at worst.

CENOS development team has done an excellent job up to version 4.0 beta (the latest version I have used). This is the first (relatively) serious RF design I have worked on since my time at PPPL in the late 1970s. While the learning curve has been steep, using modern tools and test equipment has made the effort worthwhile—things move much faster now.”
